With over two decades of experience in mechanical engineering and project management, Jan Pooters has built a career defined by versatility, a hands-on approach, and a passion for delivering quality solutions. From supervising large-scale piping installations to managing the maintenance of retail operations, Jan always brought both expertise and enthusiasm to every project. In this testimonial, we learn more about his journey, experiences, and what drives his success as a mechanical project manager.
Can you tell us about your most recent role at Delhaize?
I’ve been working as a project manager at Delhaize for the past year and eight months. My main responsibility was overseeing the maintenance and proper functioning of equipment across 124 stores. For instance, if there were issues with cooling systems, automated doors, or air conditioning, I would bring in contractors to fix them and ensure everything was back on track. It was a dynamic role where I made sure the installations were always operational.
What does your work experience as a project manager encompass?
I’ve spent a significant portion of my career managing mechanical installation projects. For example, at SPIE Belgium, I led a team working on installation, piping, and welding. My role was to prepare everything, supervise the team, and ensure we completed the project successfully—and often ahead of schedule. Before that, I worked at Indaver as a team leader for mechanical maintenance, managing crews and tackling complex machinery I hadn’t encountered before. That was a great learning experience in problem-solving and leadership. I also have an extensive background in industrial kitchen ventilation from my time at De Kobra, where I spent over eight years managing projects for professional kitchens, including those in high-end restaurants.
What drew you to mechanical engineering?
“The variety. Mechanical engineering offers so many different aspects, it’s never boring! Each project brings new challenges, whether it’s installing telescopic cranes, working on ventilation systems, or piping installations. I also love the hands-on aspect. I’m not afraid to get my hands dirty and assist when needed. For me, it’s about being in the middle of the action, collaborating with people, and ensuring the job gets done right.”
What is your approach to managing teams and projects?
“My focus is always on placing the right people in the right roles. I make it a priority to understand my team’s strengths and weaknesses so I can delegate tasks effectively. Time management is another key strength: I always aim to strike a balance between being fast and thorough. If a solution isn’t working, I’m not afraid to reconsider and adapt until we meet the customer’s expectations. My goal is to deliver high-quality results that make the client happy. Happy clients mean I’ve done my job well!”
What has been one of your most rewarding projects?
“One that stands out is a piping project I managed at SPIE Belgium. It involved installing over 1,000 meters of piping for a recycling plant that converts waste into energy. The original timeline was 13 months, but I managed to finish it in just 11. Another highlight was my work with Pringles and Kellogg’s as a production team leader. I traveled to the U.S. multiple times to learn their processes and bring that knowledge back to improve operations in Belgium.”
What do you consider the biggest challenge in project management?
“Every new project comes with its own set of challenges. At Indaver, for example, I had to work with machinery I had never seen before, and I needed to figure out how to proceed with maintenance using the right equipment. The key is to stay flexible and open to learning. I ask a lot of questions and rely on teamwork to overcome obstacles. It’s all about adapting and growing with each new experience.”
What motivates you as an on-site consultant?
“I enjoy the dynamic nature of consulting. It’s exciting to switch between projects, face new challenges, and expand my skill set. It keeps me sharp and prevents boredom. I also thrive on human interaction. As an on-site consultant, I work closely with colleagues, team members, and clients, aligning everyone’s expectations and ensuring smooth execution. Being in contact with people makes the job fulfilling.”
What advice would you give to someone pursuing mechanical engineering?
“Stay focused, stay humble, and never stop learning. Don’t be afraid to ask questions or seek help from your colleagues. Collaboration is key to success in this field. Mechanical engineering is a daring and rewarding career. There’s nothing more satisfying than creating something that works and knowing you played a role in its success.”
What sets you apart as a project manager?
“I’d say it’s my hands-on approach and my ability to manage people effectively. I build strong relationships with my team and clients, which helps ensure everyone is aligned and the project runs smoothly. I’m also confident in my mechanical expertise. Whether it’s installations, maintenance, or support, I have the knowledge and willingness to learn whatever is necessary to get the job done.”
