In his first few projects, Sebastiaan has worked as an Electronic System Engineer at Lambda-X. Finishing his studies as electronics-ICT engineer at KU Leuven combined with an advanced master in management, he felt ready to tackle professional life collaborating on the delivery of optical systems.
What prompted your decision to become a consultant?
“The opportunity for me to join Verhaert Consulting arose rather naturally at the end of my studies. It never occurred to me that I could work as an engineering consultant. The flexibility and range of projects to choose from were important factors that led me to decide to become an engineering consultant.
Not only the flexibility but also the opportunity to work on innovative projects that require creativity and problem-solving that would result in challenging myself and learning new skills in different domains is still in my eyes a no-brainer.”
What caught your attention at Verhaert Consulting?
“Verhaert Consulting has a proven track record of delivering successful solutions for complex challenges in various sectors, for instance, aerospace, healthcare and consumer goods. They allow me to grow and develop my competences, only creating more opportunities in the future and matching my interests and ambitions. Basically, the feedback, coaching and training that I need as a young engineer.”
What were the primary challenges in your recent projects, and what aspects of them are you most proud of?
“At Lambda-X High-Tech I’ve worked on several projects. My latest achievement was the development of ModaFlow and OneFlow machines from LiveDrop. Each Lambda-X project involves an optical baseline with in-house opto-mechanical design, resulting in a custom optical system that is solution-oriented for our clients. I was involved in two big projects with similar teams and delivery dates but completely different optical goals.
I’m especially proud of the adaptability of the system team, their resourcefulness and cross-domain collaboration. A trinity of optics, electronics and mechanics, with on-time product delivery for both instances.”
How have you experienced the team’s coaching support?
“I’ll never forget the opportunities that I came across at Verhaert Consulting. I can always easily approach Charlotte, my business coach and Dirk about other matters such as how I would like to improve my skill set. I have a team backing me up with technical support but also just to make sure that I’m content in my workplace. Having a team of experienced professionals to support you is priceless. They have helped me to set clear goals, identify areas to improve and work on an action plan to achieve them.”
What unique value do you bring to the customer’s project?
“Something that I keep in mind when working is trying to create an environment and atmosphere where you get people to work more efficiently and focused together.”
What have been the biggest lessons you learned at Verhaert Consulting?
“Progress over perfection, the pursuit of perfection can produce counterintuitive results. This focus on progress allows for continuous and incremental improvement. Obstacles create a fear of making mistakes, but we shouldn’t let fear prevent us from taking action. Doing something is better than nothing.”
